I've finally gotten around to reading _Soul Mountain_ by Gao Xingjian, last
year's winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature -- worth reading, although
I wish now I had read it in the French translation instead of the English,
which is a bit wooden and clunky. My wife, who is reading it in the
original Chinese, tells me his style is not that way at all.
Nothing in it I would identify as Pynchonian, except perhaps the deep
critique of the PRC leadership which frames the book and informs it in some
important ways -- you might consider that as similar to P's distrust of
authority and his critique of lying, war-mongering governments in collusion
with business interests. Or maybe not.
