Ford Forty-Nine

Hit Me a Seven / Numerology and Shavuot
Eli Birnbaum

Any one who has played craps knows the importance of numbers. The idea that
a number has more significance than just its quantatative value is prevalent
in almost every society.

Think for a minute: Even "rational" people sometimes use the phrase, "Bad
things come in threes" - even if they don't really believe it... Much of
mysticism is based on the centrality of numbers. Many of us may dismiss or
denigrate the idea that numbers run our lives - unless you live in Las Vegas
of course.

Biblical commentators and psychologists have all analyzed the rationale
behind relying on the use of numerology. Is it just superstition or are the
uncanny plays on numbers difficult to just explain away? What we can accept
as a given, is that the belief in the importance of certain numbers is an
influential part of Judaism.

Of all the numbers, none comes up more often in Eastern religions and
mysticism than 7 (except in eastern U.S. where for some philosophical reason
the number 11 is usually connected to it and advertised over small shops).

The number 7 is probably the most analyzed and mystic number of all. Much of
the Bible relates to it.

[7*7=49]
