I'm dead serious about this one, by the way.  I mean,
look at this scene.  And we know Pynchon knows his
Fantastic Four ... 

But see also Robert A. Heinlein, The Puppet Masters
(1951).  The first of the "body snatcher" stories,
discounting here Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Body
Snatcher" (1884) ...

... which is a different other thing entirely.  Not
only predates Jack Finney's The Body Snatchers (1955),
but the film adaptation (dir. Sturat Orme, 1994) is my
favorite "body snatching" movie ...
