Don't know about the "old folk/county song" but I'd be kind of surprised if
name of the song "Sold American" (Kinky Friedman) as well as that of the
group "Souled American" weren't inpired by the opening auctioneer's chant on
the Jack Benny Lucky Strike Sunday evening radio program. Jack started being
sponsored by Luckys while WWII was still going strong and this continued
well into the 50s. The phrase "sold
American" (actually "sold to American" if you listened closely) was at least
as well known as the pledge of allegiance, God Bless America., and who the
President was (FDR, soon to be Truman much to Slothrop's surprise).

Also there was fairly recent book about the loss of their  land by
indiginous Alaskans titled  "Sold American."

In other words the phrase is a natural slogan.  Could well be adopted by the
anti-globalist or anti-American-hegemony contingent.
