The most basic truths of life are simple ones to the
intellect. For that reason, the intellect is apt to
sneer at them. Yet for all the subtleties the
intellect is capable of, it has no lasting remedy for
the profound distress of
the human condition. We live in extraordinary times
that demand
totally new ways of thinking but thinking with a
different basis. The answers
are apt to be ignored because people think they are
too simplistic, or
unrealistic pie-in-the-sky optimism. In fact, they are
the only realistic way
out of the present difficulties.

The answer lies not in thinking alone but in what
motivates our intellect. Call it our underlying values
if you will but it is much deeper than that.
Simple things are at the same time wonders. Things
simple in concept are simple
to see but as deep as the sky and as vast as the sea.

Love. How is it possible to show love in the midst of
the manifestations of terror and hate? It seems to go
against nature. Yet it is possible and it
does happen. People everywhere are motivated by the
vision and the desire to
love. We need leaders who can give voice to these
desires.

Goodwill. A refusal by an enlightened mind to fight
evil with its own weapons and perpetuate the battle of
evil with evil weapons on both sides. It
is a belief that there must be and there is a better
way. Goodwill is only a
first step. Goodwill requires faith. All answers are
not known or
anticipated beforehand. We believe when we practice
goodwill that the process of
an open dialogue, without preconditions and judgments,
will
work out a solution. What that solution may be we
don‚t yet know. Nor is there
only one possible solution. We have faith in human
creativity when it
is motivated by goodwill.

Right now many people are feeling anger. Others give
in to despair. Life seems more uncertain. Some people
rejoice at evil. Don‚t give in to
anger hate or despair. Life is always uncertain. Fear,
anger and despair lead to
greater uncertainties. Do not deny your feelings; they
need your
love. You need to allow them to express themselves.
Connect and talk with
others. Open a dialog with the people in your own
life.

Right human relations, simple justice, opportunity for
all peoples in all countries are the things America
claims to want. These are the things
offer the one hope of freedom and security and a firm
foundation for the future.
Yet we must each of us pray for the wisdom to find
these things in
their true form and not think we have all the answers.
Others have different
viewpoints and different points of view and different
views can each
have validity even when they are in opposition. If we
really knew the answers to
justice and opportunities for all, we certainly
haven‚t shown it or
achieved it. When we have problems at home we need not
preach to others how to
set their own houses in order.

There are fears and grievances on all sides, among all
peoples. There has been enough arrogance and hypocrisy
on all sides. There is even a
systematic education of hate practiced in some parts
of the world. Others are
subtler, fostering attitudes of a self-righteous
nationalism that
ignores the larger vision and the views of others. The
people in some countries
remain in wilful ignorance of the sufferings of others
and just want
to go on with their lives unaffected by the troubles
of others. Others want to
find an easy target upon which to place blame.
Unfortunately,
America often finds itself made into such a target.
This is often unjust but is
not without all reason.

A spirit of humility that can acknowledge faults on
all sides is needed. Not wallowing in guilt or
self-recrimination but the knowledge that where
there is goodwill anything is possible; that where
there is the goodwill to work
toward betterment, better things are possible.

What will bring better conditions? What can bring
security? Prudence indicates the need for contanst
vigilance based on good intelligence. It is
usually foolish to ignore prudence. But all the
prudence and foresight in the
world cannot protect you against every possible evil.
There is no lock
that cannot be broken in time and no fortress that
cannot be taken or destroyed.
Will America and the world become a fortress nation?
True
security comes about when we can share a common vision
and when our actions are
motivated by goodwill. True peace is not a static
condition
but a dynamic, changing condition of creative tension.

When we are determined that all people and all nations
shall know security and we are willing to pay the
price, then we will have security and
peace. A strong response is not one that listens to
the counsels of fear. A
strong response is not a response based on vengeance
or on fear, but
which has the clearness, the courage and the strength
to see beyond them.

We must break the cycle of violence and fear. America
likes to see itself as the leader of the free world.
Leadership has responsibilities. Let us
be the ones to set the example and to light the way.

The problems that foster terrorism are at bottom
problems created by fear and ignorance. Security is a
world problem. It is a problem facing
humanity, not just the problem of America or countries
that face it directly. If
we wish to lead the world into a better future,
America needs to rally
the nations of the world˜their peoples as well as
their leaders. We need to
unite with all others who respond to the note of
goodwill. Havens of
darkness, harbors of terrorism, violators of human
rights˜and these things exist
in some measure in every country of the world without
exception--must be brought to light and the infection
cleared and healed. Only a
world-wide united cooperation will succeed in the long
run or
bring about a desirable result.

We must end denial. You can do your individual part in
this by making a commitment to ending the denial in
yourself. Everyone has some areas
of denial. Open your ears to hearing it. Open your
mind to seeing it. What is
denied in us is what needs love most of all. Pray,
mediate, visualize
the possibilities of a better world and you will be
helping to create that
future. Demand that our leaders and our media act from
a vision of
goodwill and better possibilities. Do then what you
feel you should and what you
can, even if it consists only in sharing the vision
with others. At
the time of greatest darkness gather together with
others to talk about the
possibilities in the coming dawn.

The world is once again at a crossroads. We can choose
either the path indicated by fear, separation and
greater isolation -- leading to less
freedom for everyone -- or the path of cooperation
that is determined to create
better conditions. They do not exist now; they need to
be created.

There are many forces and values that will fight the
path of cooperation because cooperation will mean
sacrifice. It will threaten the power of
some. It will mean a sacrifice of attitudes as well as
a sacrifice of effort and
money. For America, giving up our cherished illusion
that only our own
vision is the correct one might be even harder to do
than economic sacrifice.

Only the path of cooperation and goodwill can lead us
to a brighter future, a future that has any hope of
permanence. That future is not static; it
is a dynamic and evolving future. The alternative is a
repetitious cycle of
fear, violence and reprisals leading to no where but
more violence. It is a
future that goes nowhere but downwards.

We must break the cycle of violence by sacrificing our
distrust, our fear, our arrogance and self
righteousness and invoke the necessary love
and goodwill that is able to sweep away obstacles and
bring about the creative
and spiritual response that is needed.

Open your hearts, America. Open your hearts, people
of the world. In this hour of darkness, call forth and
let in the Light!

If you think that these thoughts have any value,
please pass them along to a friend.

Thanks.
