someone suggested that cherrycoke is like tv. taking up this idea, i'd like to
look at the name "cherrycoke" itself. a ref to the trumpet player don cherry?
probably not, the revd plays no free jazz, does he? when i first read the
name cherrycoke i had, you must excuse an ignorant foreigner, the association of
the soft drink having the same name, created and provided by the coca-cola
company. does this make any sense? perhaps (you'll tell me!). in a vinelandian
perspective this could be observed as reflecting today's media-ontology with its
specific restrictions: "the following novel is presented to you in association
with coca-cola!" by publishing his novel on the (white!) market, pynchon accepts
being part of the economic game. publishing date, review organizing, price
politics. all this has nothing to do with art itself, and pynchon is not sharing
the avantgarde's dream of the fusion of art & life: "it is too late". if we
consider cherrycoke to be m&d's tv-narrator, the revd's self-characterization as
"an untrustworthy remembrancer" (8) whose "name had never been my own" (10)
makes a surprising sense. note also that, like in the case of vineland's zoyd
wheeler, the labeling as "mad" goes along with the conflictious involvement with
powerful repressive organizations ... "strange lights, fires, voices
indecipherable" ... anybody still with me? kai frederik
