For me, the superscript 'd' on the abbreviated version of Reverend masked
the modern, beverage associations of 'Cherrycoke'. Initially I just read an
old english protestant vicar... probably from an orchard vicarage in the
south of England...

Thirty pages later I saw beyond that antiquating little 'd' and read the
Reverend Cherry-Coke... the sacred and the profane..a priest for another
time (from another time?) TRP laughing at himself, his status?

(Am I wrong in sensing a typographical trade off between the 'd' and the
missing hyphen?)

Appearances and different times cross over literally on the page - my
suspicions are raised, I'm looking out for the hidden...
