This one surprised me a little. I'd always assumed that "I guess"
was a fairly modern American turn of phrase. If so and it's not
intended here in the modern meaning, what was Dixon guessing at?

I recollect it's not too early (for a drink) might have sound more authentic.
Or, I suppose it's not too early.
People have rules about these things. Mine is being able to see the sun over the yardarm. Or is it under the yardarm?
