But the facts don't support this paranoid conspiracy. The economy has
been hurt.
The so called war economy, oil companies, defense contractors, insurance
companies, wall street bankers and brokerage, aviation, have been the
hardest hit by the recent
shock to the economy. The economy was stalled, was in a recession in
many sectors, capacity utilization at the nation's factories and
manufacturing plants was below 75% and all the numbers prior to the
terrorist attack were indicating that the interest rate cutting soft
landing was not going to keep the USA economy from falling into a deeper
recession, at least for some regions, but this attack will not fuel a
recovery, it will drag the economy deeper into recession. Besides, if
the plan was to make the elite rich with a war economy, why attack the
world trade center with planes? No, this was an attack on the financial
system of the West and it has been very successful. The timing, from
the terrorist's perspective, their objective being to cripple the USA
economy, could not have been better. The paranoid thinking of Slothrop
and Enzian, about WWII and the Cold War, imply don't apply to this
situation. Of course there are many common elements, oil being the most
obvious, the enemies of yesterday being allies today and enemies
tomorrow, the helplessness of the preterite, so on, but in terms of the
economy, this situation will be a negative almost all round the
globe.
