Of course, not a few traders, those fellows in the pits, you may have
seen them on TV screaming an waving their arms, sporting funny jackets
and tiny note books, trading everything from oil, to pigs, to options on
futures on third world defaulted debentures have reason to be paranoid.
Theirs a tradition that began around the cherry tree on wall street. By
law certain securities must be traded with hand signals and shouts, but
there has been several attempts to buggy whip (do away with the traders
in the pits) these positions and replace them with electronic trading.
In 1993, after these guys were bombed at the WTC, they rented office
space in Queens and set up trading pits there. Those pits have been
waiting for this moment. In the days after the attack, the Europeans
picked up the slack, electronically, threatening the livelihood of the
pit traders and the thousands, upon thousands of people that support
them, the clearinghouses that filled the WTC were destroyed, the papers
scattered over Brooklyn.
It's no surprise to me, that my dear friends at Fitz got up and going
straight away, but the pit traders, with limited space, are sharing the
pits, round-robining their time in the pits at an hour and a half per
day each and trying to avoid the fate of the skycaps.
