It occured to me that there might have been a lot of rumours about military secrets and that those
had been the basis for "the white visitation". I can imagine Pynchon hearing about some mysterious
operation and drawing his own conclusions about what it involved (given a vacuum a paranoid mind
will fill it and, of course, there's proverbs for paranoid no. 3).
