If he's really a Christian, he doesn't need any book but the Bible. That's
what my grandma would have said. Pynchon was raised in a religious milieu,
granted. I actually went through eighteen years of Sunday School, memorized
verses, received awards for perfect attendance, was baptized by immersion at
the age of ten.
I am not now a Christian. Pynchon is probably not now a Christian. I don't
see a dominant Christian theme in his writings. I see a lot of implied
criticism of the Institution. The ethics of Christianity are shared by all
the world's religions, including paganism & Marxism. It is not unique,
except perhaps in its fear of death & loathing of sexuality. Does my early
Christian indoctrination affect my life? Of course. Does it affect
Pynchon's life & work? Of course.
