It sets my teeth on edge just to read this 1985 comment. And it reminds me
of P's dedication of Vineland, published in '90, set (primarily) in '84:
"For my mother and father" -- given the problematic nature of the family in
this novel, I suspect unanticipated depths of irony and nuance in this
dedication.
