Matter of taste , of course , but for me Pynchon?s main rival is J.P.
Donleavy . His books are not so complicated and full of erudition , but
portrayal of optimistical losers or unmistakable style (you never mix J.P. with
anybody else ) , well , call it Pynchon-like , if you wish . And I guess ?The
Ginger Man? was among Pynchon?s inspirations for ?V? . Benny would find a lot
in common with Sebastian Dangerfield .
And only Pynchon is as good at switching from slapstick to sadness as
Donleavy . But , again . it?s only a matter of taste .
