But, "turns it against" might but doesn't necessarily mean "whips with" --
it can also mean,
"threatens with"
(One dictionary definition doesn't exclude other meanings or connotations
or a word or phrase.)

Why draw this dividing Line, when we (you, me, Dave, jbor, Otto, etc.)
agree on so much? It's a tactic that serves to split, to set one side
against another, rather than moving the discussion towards common ground
and interesting variations on same -- that's what this could be, imo.

Take that phrase where you like, we do have the texts that Pynchon wrote
available to read and discuss. I'm not sure I understand why you object to
taking the text as a starting point (or perhaps I misunderstand).
