Kai's idea to have a reading of 'Education' is not very good.

The reason for this is that mr. Adams has influenced mr. Pynchon philosophically,
and that's it. Such a reading would not be interesting for those who want
to discuss other aspects of mr. Pynchon's works: literary devices, ethics
& politics, jokes & puns, tracing quotes and references, American history,
literary theory, sciences, . . .

Mr. Pynchon's work is a combination of different aspects; this makes reading
his works, be it on your own, or on this forum, such a marvel. There is
always something new to discover. When we read on pynchon-l something else
than Pynchon, we will always leave out many list members (participating or
not) who are here primarily because of our man.

The current 'whip incident' being discussed contains all of these aspects:
ethics & style coming together, and discussed together.

And I'd like to remind this list -- as Dave Monroe just did-- we have not
gone through his early work; --or do we only have to take into account the
masterpieces? We haven't been discussing his journalism systematically; or,
for that matter the 1968/1969 letter. We have only gone superficially through
Lot 49. We have not gone through the 'Slow Learner' intro, which is, I think,
fiction in its own way.

The argument of having support of two list members agreeing of having 'Education'
read is not quite an overwhelming majority. If Kai wants to have a formal
no: 'I would prefer not to.'

By the way: a search on nabokv-l gave nearly 800 hits on 'Pale Fire'. If
I were interested in 'Pale Fire', I'd go to nabokv-l:

I am & so I did.
