This came up during the Vineland reading awhile back. 
I continue to think that with Takeshi Pynchon
deliberately seeks to created the recreate the stilted
English subtitled or dubbed dialogue effect of the
Asian movies that seem to be a source for that novel.

About the accent serving as a plot element for "TSR",
as Pynchon mentions in the Intro, I still don't see
the justifaction for leaping to the conclusion that
Buttercup shares Dugan's racist attitudes because the
pronounces "out" as "oot" the way Dugan does. Nowhere
in the story does Buttercup or the narrator shed any
light on her attitudes towards race.  That she talks
like a person who irritates Levine seems to be a
factor in his decision to treat her like a whore, not
her attitudes about race which never rise to the
surface of the story the way Dugan's racist attitudes
do.
