By the way, was also struck on seeing The Two Towers
by thematic et al. similarities to, say, Gravity's
Rainbow, esp. in re: industrialization, ecology,
technology (the One Ring, the S-Gerat), "the quest"
(and for the aforementioned), preterition, even. 
Again, WWI, WWII, and onward.  The 20th century ...
