Apart from the texts Kai mentions (I am only familiar with Poenicken's take on GR),
Frye's near structuralist "Anatomy of Criticism" comes to mind, in which this
Canadian Jesuit outlines standard or "archetypal" plot structures and character
constellations for various traditional literary genres. Senex vs. Puer would be one
of those "archetypal" character constellations.

The book has been attacked, often for the right reasons, but is still a masterpiece
of literary criticism, I believe.

Thomas

P.S. Or is it "archetypical"?
