Does anyone remember the "Tardis" of the BBC's Dr. Who?  Relative boundaries 
are emphasized with Pynchon's fantastic ships.  Inside V. Outside is a 
favorite Pyncchon theme, and he has a great sense of architectural space.  
His vehicles are elaborations of Jules Vernes' submarine sleds.
