Jan. 8, 2002 | BERLIN (AP) --
Police on Tuesday defused an unexploded World War II bomb found under the
seats of Berlin's Olympic Stadium.
The 550-pound British bomb was found Monday evening during renovations by
construction workers under the lower ring of seats, police spokeswoman
Kerstin Spitzer said. The area was sealed, and the bomb squad began work at
first light Tuesday.
The defusing went without a hitch and the bomb was then removed from the
stadium to be destroyed, Spitzer said.
The 76,000-seat stadium, designed by Nazi architect Albert Speer for the
1936 Olympics, is being overhauled to host games during soccer's 2006 World
Cup. Games continue to be played at the arena.
