This is silly.  What writer of any stature doesn't deal with the media on his 
own terms?  Roth, Bellow, Updike--any one of them has something to say, they 
get access on their own terms--NYRB, NYT op ed, etc.  

The main difference is they manage not to come off sounding simple-minded.
