This is bullshit.  The ruckus is due to the banality of the content.

More bullshit.  You make another baseless charge, and then you back away as 
if you hadn't REALLY made it.  If you're going to make a charge, then MAKE 
IT!  The truth is, the speaker (if it is Pynchon) says nothing really 
controversial, only stupid.  The "there might never have been a Bin Laden" 
statement (is this the "what that might be?") is a lame rhetorical device.  
I don't expect even the speaker believes that to be literal.

It's not Doug (though he wishes it were), and it's not controversial 
content, it's the stupidity, stupid!
