Thanks a lot, Terrance.

The "real" source of the quote is indeed more interesting (in some ways)
than the typo. It tells us how carefully Pynchon chooses his quotes, that
there's mostly a "second meaning" behind. And Matthew's two quotes tell a
lot about the "facts" of historians.

I like Dave's idea of "a tantalizing undecidability."
