I don't mind reading an American author, but it might be enjoyable to try a European or Eastern author, just to get a break from the VV and GRGR and CoL49 and MDDM string the list has undergone.  Just a thought. 
The Confidence Man would be a perfect choice. 
Again, I think the choice need not be made yet, but when it is, it should be done so very carefully.  As someone suggested, far too many people pipe in with choices, but few stay with the group read thru its conclusion. 
The people who stuck with MDDM from start to finish (and made substantive contributions to discussion threads) should pick the next book. They earned some stripes.
