>>What I like about _Confederacy_ is the collection of quirky, almost

>>Ignatius J. Reilly! I'm curious, though: why is he so "loved"?
A life-sized bronze satue of Ignatius J. Reilly stands beneath the DH Holmes
(a defunct department store) clock on Canal Street,

a past traditional "I'll meet you at" location, back when Canal St was still
a shopping destination. In the novel he is a complete failure as a Lucky
Dog vendor,

a job typically filled bt those just barely above the gutter.
[See this review of a memoir by a manager of Lucky Dogs vendor for 20 years:

This is a very quirky, almost third-world, and very parochial city with a
tradition of appreciating strange characters and loving the absurd.
Ignatius is very real here.
