Mighty Monica clued me in to a handful of Latin American authors I was
unfamiliar with. I have just finished reading the sole novel from the
first of them, Juan Rulfo. Rulfo's novel "Pedro Paramo" was published in
English in 1959. Pynchon was in college then and I believe there is a
strong likelihood he read this book and incorporated in his work Rulfo's
incredible views on what lies "on the other side of the veil." In "Pedro
Paramo" almost all of the characters are either dead or about to die.
The dead may be either actively involved in the world of the living or
only tangentially attached to their mortal companions. I have never
read anything like this book. I'd appreciate other comments on it.
