&../Articles/tt_087.htm Fetchit, Stepin
Born Lincoln Theodore Monroe Perry, "Stepin Fetchit" became an almost
mythical figure in African American popular culture. After attending a
Catholic boarding school until he was 12, Perry joined the vaudeville
circuit accompanied by comic Ed Lee performing a minstrel act called "Step
'n' Fetchit: Two Dancing Fools from Dixie." In the early 1920s Perry went
solo and retained Stepin Fetchit as his stage name.
As Stepin Fetchit, he became quite popular on the Theater Owners Booking
Association (TOBA) performance circuit. After moving to Hollywood, Perry
appeared in more than 40 films between 1927 and 1976, including In Old
Kentucky (1927), Judge Priest (1934), and The Steamboat Round the Bend
(1935).

Gertrude Howard, Stepin Fetchit, Unidentified
"This film supposedly outraged black audiences. By now though, the
multi-talented Stepin Fetchit was on his way to becoming one of the highest
paid performers in Hollywood, black or white. "
"Gershom fetch us if you will some Pipes and a Bowl of the new-cur'd Hemp.
And another gallon of your magnificent Punch. There's a good fellow."
