Maybe the Thanatoids in Vineland drag as an echo of an original Rulfian 
scream.

I believe Pynchon does take some of the original ambiguity of PP into his 
element of characterization, rendering contours unclear for the sake of a 
final solution, or for the just degree of irresolution which maximizes the 
sombre beauty of his works.
