In the Cyclops, the monocular monster's inability to
produce a parallax-- that slight shift in perspective
between two points of view provides Joyce endless fun
and puns and parody. The simplest example of the
parallax is the differing perspective of two eyes, the
effect of which produces depth-vision. Polyphemus
literally lacks depth perception; in "Cyclops," each
narrative eyewitness likewise lacks depth. Of course
there is a bilographical fact that influences the
chapter--Joyce's eyes. In this Chapter of M&D, a
biographical fact seems to have influenced the chapter
too.
On another topic, why has so much of the biographical
literary criticism of Pynchon failed to say anything
about his Mother?
A belated happy father's day to all you fathers,
Boquita
