"It is only fair to warn even the most kindly
disposed of readers that there are some mighty tiresom
passages here, juvenile and delinquent too. At the
same time, my best hope is that, pretentious, goofy
and ill-considered as they get now and then, these
stories will still be of use with all their flaws
intact, as illustrative of typical problems in
entry-level fiction, and cautionary about some
practices which younger writers might prefer to
avoid." (SL, "Intro," p. 4)

Lest this be taken as commentary on the List as well
... well, honesty? Modesty? False modesty? Any or
all of the aforementioned? But it is only fair to
warn that, when they are directed at specific texts, I
will be leaving most of Pynchon's pronunciations on
the literary/aesthetic/whatever merits of his various
works to those discussing the specific texts in
question. Less'n of course I actually just so happen
to have a little something to say about the matter
myself. But I think it would behoove us (meaning, to
shod us with hooves?) to turn and return (to
everything ... there is a season ...) to Pynchon's
"Introduction" to Slow Learner as we take up
subsequent segments thereof, to see how his commends
accord (or not) with the stories. Not that I'd take
the author's judgment as in any way The Last Word on
any given subject here, but ... well, skipping ahead,
which is not to say that I won't skip back ...
