Seems to me Pynchon is crafting a persona, a character
here, as he does in his fiction.  Which is not to say
he's not being honest.  There is an honesty that goes
beyond mere fact, in literature, as others have
mentioned, here and elsewhere.  I don't see any reason
to believe he wouldn't create this Intro as a
multi-leveled work, folding, concealing, revealing,
even "misdirecting", as he does his fiction.
