It may be possible to read that "As nearly as I can
remember" as a caution that what follows may not be
completely reliable, that Pynchon may be putting us
on, to some degree, in this Intro.  That was the
suggestion once made John Mascaro on the P-list.  A
humble tone develops as well -- impossible to know how
closely that matches Pynchon's own "voice"; it does
seem at odds with the tone of the bits and pieces of
his letters that have emerged, where P speaks with
authority and conviction; it wouldn't be surprising
that he's mellowed, either, since those rather
grandiose (justifiably so, imo) letters to his agent
in the '60s when he set out some ambitious literary
goals for himself, as reported when those letters
surfaced a few years back (NY Times' Mel Gussow
covered it, Salon.com had a good story about them,
too).
