SLSL Intro "As Nearly as I Can Remember"

I recently saw John Updike at a reading where he gave a lovely performance of
his poem about the month of March--including a long, folksy introduction
about how he had written it in his "ingenuous, ambitious" days as a young
writer and soon-to-be-father as a dedication to his first child, due to be
born in March. The piece is arty and high-minded and lengthy for poetry but
read beautifully. When he'd completed the reading he said, "And in keeping
with youth, my child was born on April first!" just an anecdote re: the
"mellowing" of fine minds...
