Dave, let's not confuse CS Aristotelean Genre
structures with
cryptology/biography/conspiracy/politcal far-fetching
and stretching.

Hollander begins with Genre, specifically MS, but he
never really says much about it. I think his idea that
Pynchon can be read as a satrist is very cool and more
than four or five major P scholars have taken this
subject up in full length studies, but Hollander never
says much about it except that since P can be read as
a M-satirist we can situate him in the school of
politcal satirists. He then turns to the under the
tapestry readings of threads. That's not CS. It's out
on a limb and not very scientific. Also, CS linking of
texts within a framework is quite different from find
a name or half a anme in a book and opening texts
outside the framework based on that name. McKeon would
roll over in his grave.

Reilly is not CS either and is not nearly as
inventive. Hollander is a strong reader but...and I
mean no disrespect here...is the kind of reader that
Nobokov says reads with the head and not the back.
Like Thoreen, and I like these guys I really do, he's
a political head. That's cool. CS is pluralism first.
But

Reilly? That essay strikes me as just the sort of
thing that pops into one's head when one doesn't have
a sense of humor about academic let down. Wow! Had
Pynchon pegged, but.... oh man was I ever was wrong.
and then, oh no, I can let go of this, this is a
trick. Let me see, Slow
Learner...hmmmmm....yeah....1984....VL too.....and
Reagan and Olie and yeah I was right all along.
