I think, in the course of of debating something as contentious as Pynchon's
"intent", that we can all weather a pointed remark or two. I suspect that
if Jbor's was to gore in this instance, he would have been even LESS
circumspect......I've been there before.....

Most of that is flamebait, unworthy of response.

Looks like we -- that "we" is inclusive of everybody
who's participated in this thread, not trying to
divide us into two warring factions -- have
demonstrated, picking out one nuance then another,
finding one then another way to read this or that,
that there's very little that's "straightforward" (I
think that's what somebody was trying to assert
earlier) about this Intro. Pynchon confounds
expectations at every turn, not only here in our
little discussion group, but among his readers at the
time SL was published.
