SLSL Intro: poorly written?

... but, well, context.  1984 or thereabouts.  But I
don't get why y'all are so down on the "Intro" here. 
I've pretty much never reread the short stories, not
in earnest, at any rate, but I've read the "Intro" a
buncha times, and, well, it's what he writes.  Y'all
can argue about how well he does it, but I'm rather
more interested in what he might be getting across
despite, well, whatever ...
