Not a very fruitful observation, really. (Assuming the
Intro is "poorly written" doesn't get a reader very
far, either.)  The reader must deal with the material
Pynchon approved for publication.  Whatever an
editor's response might have been to the Intro, the
version before us is what Pynchon chose to present, no
matter how much fun it might be to speculate on what
he might have written instead.
