... and, having no doubt that this (as every) year's
Prize will be inevitably, undeniably politicized, a
few last minute, bet-hedging thoughts.  I'm still
holding out for Our Man Pynchon, who I can see as a
critically "American" American writer, and one who
notoriously Saw Things Coming ('cos they were already
underway).  On the other hand, a friend in the know
vouches for this "Adonis," but ... 

But perhaps there's safe money to be laid on that
Estonian guy after all.  Sort of like the caretaker
pope (say, that elderly Belgian cardinal) likely to be
elected in the wake of JPII, someone to hold down the
fort on the way to the bigger, tougher choices.  Which
is not to denigrate the literature or the people of
Estonia, but ... well, one of those relatively benign
and even kindly choices the Academy seems to make from
time to time (e.g., Szymborska), is all ...

But this doesn't even begin to take into account the
fact that there hasn't been a female Laureate since
Toni Morrison.  I am reminded of a (drunken, when I do
my best, or at least loudest, thinking) claim of mine
that a female South East Asian or even Pacific poet
would be the ideal candidate this year, but ... but
Atwood?  Munro (sorry ...)?  OATES?  Lessing, maybe,
but ... but I'll defer to Thomas here ...

Okay, now I just gotta get hold of my bookie ...
