slaggin' pynchon pre-Nobel

I THINK I'm right about this, but ... well, took me a
moment to realize that the Thomases weren't being
quite idiomatic (which is hardly to say that they are
thus idiotic) here.  We're reading "beyond our man's
league" as if it's being said that DeLillo is better
than, is "beyond" Pynchon, but I THINK what's intended
here is that DeLillo isn't quite IN Pynchon's league. 
I THINK.  Let me know ...
