I fear you are right -- eight years ago the PDS (former SED) of Gregor Gysi
secured Helmut Kohl's last victory.

There were election posters saying: "Without Gysi there will be Kohl" -- the
reality turned out the other way round.

This time the SPD lost voters to all other parties but gained a lot from the
PDS in the Eastern departments.
