Barbara (real or imagined...given the absence of witnesses at The Party, I
guess your three-dimensionality is still somewhat suspect, but your picture
of Doug's house was so Déjà vu charming [as in Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young]
that I choose to believe in you) and everyone else...
Thanks for asking for my ideas about Our Author's notions of preemption but I
must demur. The reason I joined The List is that I am decidedly rusty on The
Master and picked up M&D this summer only to find myself mired in confusion
with no one to talk to about it (certain topics tend to clear a room; for
non-fans Pynchon exegesis is one of them!)...I hardly dare make statements
about where P stands until I am a refreshed reader (ph after Slow Learner?)
But I stand strong by my peace plan:
if Pynchon/Barthelme/Kafka/Barth/Sartre/Hawkes/Mishima/Rushdie/Rimbaud/and
throw in Louise Gluck for good measure could be gathered together (or
reincarnated as necessary), locked in a sealed room and be forced to remain
there until they could agree on ANYTHING--during which time NO violence would
take place ANYWHERE--then we, our children and their children would
undoubtedly live long and peaceful lives. For that matter, the group of us
could probably be locked into a room under the same conditions with the same
effect! Anybody up for it? (The potential antimilitary might of literateurs
is sadly undervalued these days!)
