Your post hardly seems out of order (shouldn't sulk in any case).
COL49 is as good a place to start as any, probably what most people read
first. or you could read in chronological order, which would mean starting
with V.
I'm not sure that any one of the novels "prepares" for the others so, unless
you want to read them all, I would also recommend going straight to Gravity's
Rainbow, which is where the real treasures lie.
