Using e-less English is just a formal constraint...
But the translator is supposed to stick at the plot
too; in Oulipo, the use of formal constraints
aims at reaching more freedom in the plot. Translating
"la Disparition" instead of "writing any new material
with the same e-less constraint" is a
completely different challenge; the constraint doesn't
lead to any narrative ingeniosity since the plot is
already fixed... Technically impressive, but so
borrying, isn't it?>>

He translated the book; i.e., he stuck to the plot.
It's true (I think it's true) that this didn't lead to
any ingeniosity; however, one might argue that the
task is made more difficult thereby, since choice is
further restricted (or perhaps that's what you are
saying; it's hard for me to tell).
And if by "borrying" you mean "boring," well I don't
know; not if the translator didn't find it so. One
might argue similarly that all translation is
borrrying. Given the time involved, I hope that isn't
the case. Poor Constance Garnett ...
