One of the victims of the US atomic bombings was free press in Japan and
elsewhere. The US worked very hard to silence those that called the
bombings an atrocity. 

Of course it was an atrocity. 

85% of 	Americans (immediately after they were dropped)  believed it was
the right thing to do. 

This view has not changed much in the USA. 

FWIW, The organized and institutionalized Church not only condemned the
USA for dropping the bombs, it tried to prevent the USA from doing so.
The Catholic Church has been and remains  on the front lines of the
Peace movement and the nuclear disarmament movement.
