Jan. 1, 1984:  Bell Systems broken up, with its 22 local telephone companies
organized into regional holding companies;  AT&T divided into AT&T
Communications and AT&T Technologies, Inc.
Jan. 18, 1984:  George Orwell's book 1984 becomes the fastest-selling book
in the U.S.
March 30, 1984:  Reagan ends U.S. role in Beirut by releasing Sixth Fleet
from peacekeeping force for duty elsewhere in Mediterrean.
April 1, 1984:  Rock and Roll singer Marvin Gaye is killed by his father.
April 10, 1984:  First baby born from a frozen embryo in Australia
July 12, 1984. Happy Days ends its network television run.  Joanie and
Chachi were married in the very last episode.
July 14, 1984:  Democrat Walter Mondale selects Geraldine Ferraro as his
running mate for the 1984 presidential election.
July 16-19, 1984:  39th Democratic National Covention in San Francisco
nominates Walter Mondale and Geraldine Ferraro.
July 20-23, 1984:  Nude photos of Vanessa Williams cost her the Miss America
title.
July 28, 1984:  Olympic Games open in Los Angeles.
Aug. 20-25, 1984: 33rd Republican National Convention at Dallas, renominates
President Reagan and Vice President Bush.
August 30, 1984:  Space Shuttle Discovery makes maiden flight.
Sept. 20, 1984:  Suicide Driver Blasts U.S. Lebanon Embassy.  23 reported
dead, scores injured.
October 26, 1984:  Babbon's heart is implanted into Baby Fae
November 6, 1984:  Ronald Reagan defeats Walter Mondale and is re-elected
president in a landslide.  He gets 525 electorial votes and 59% of popular
votes.
November 11, 1984:  Vietnam memorial is dedicated in Washington.
November 28 1984: Republican Bob Doe of Kansas is elected Senate Leader.
