Labor day is 1 May.
I guess if we ignore the text we can say Vineland is about anything we
want.
There is no evidence in the text that RC went AWOL, deserted his
platoon, changed his name because he betrayed anyone or anything. None.
This novel is about Work, Partnerships, Business Contracts, Deals, Rats,
Scabs, in other words Pynchon has written your classic American Labor
novel.
Oh it's like layin' bricks, without a trowel ... VL.162

Dashiell Hammett left school early, and spent his adolescence and young
adulthood in a variety of odd jobs. His life truly began when he joined
the
Pinkerton Detective Agency in 1915.
