"'Here's your back pack. 'Me gotta go,' as the
Kingsmen always used to say, and you too.'" (VL, Ch.
9, p. 190)

"Me gotta go"

"Louie, Louie," Richard Berry (1955)

Louie Louie, me gotta go
Louie Louie, me gotta go

A fine little girl, she wait for me
Me catch the ship across the sea
I sailed the ship all alone
I never think I'll make it home

Louie Louie, me gotta go
Louie Louie, me gotta go

Three nights and days we sailed the sea
Me think of girl constantly
On the ship, I dream she there
I smell the rose in her hair

Louie Louie, me gotta go
Louie Louie, me gotta ggo

Me see Jamaican moon above
It won't be long me see me love
Me take her in my arms and then
I tell her I never leave again

Louie Louie, me gotta go
Louie Louie, me gotta go

The original "LOUIE LOUIE" was written in 1955 by
Richard Berry and released as a single in 1957 on Flip
Records. Recorded with The Pharaohs, Richard created a
catchy, somewhat calypso diddy that was originally
intended as the B-side for his recording of "You Are
My Sunshine." ...

... the Kingsmen's "Louie, Louie," a 60s frat anthem
and garage-rock classic that is in itself a cover -
the original was done by 50s R&B artist Richard Berry,
who wrote it himself as a sort of sea chanty tribute
(lyrically, at any rate). In Berry's original lyrics,
Louie himself is a bartender, and the singer is
telling him about a girl he left behind. The reason he
"gotta go" is to get back to her. Simple. Charming,
even. Yet when the Kingsmen covered it in 1963, they
did it so cheaply that the lyrics became hopelessly
garbled. Indeed, according to the band members, the
vocals were sung into one huge boom mike hanging above
the rest of the chaos.

"the Kingsmen"

Two groups in particular began playing it in their
concert appearances: The Kingsmen from the Portland,
Oregon area and Paul Revere and the Raiders, a group
that was originally formed in Idaho but traveled
extensively across the region. The Kingsmen had formed
in Portland in 1960 and consisted of Lynn Easton on
drums, Mike Mitchell on guitar, Don Gallucci on
keyboards, Bob Nordby on bass, and guitar player and
lead singer Jack Ely. By the time they recorded Louie,
Louie, they ranged in age from 17 to 20. On a Friday
night in April, 1963, The Kingsmen performed at an
outdoor concert and did a marathon version of the
song, and the crowd couldn't get enough of it. The
following morning, according to lead singer Jack Ely,
they went to a small recording studio in Portland
called Northwest Recorders to do the song. Paul Revere
& The Raiders recorded the song in the same studio the
same month, but it was The Kingsmen's version that was
destined for greatness....
