<<not to belabor one of your annoyed note before
(pynchon, Gaddis, DeLillo in same sentence) but who
has the range of a Gaddis or Pynchon in terms of
incorporating many different characters into one
cohesive novel today ...>>

As you're including Gaddis, I don't know if you mean
exclusively living writers, but Bellow certainly, at
least the younger Bellow of Augie March and Humboldt's
Gift. And if merely incorporating numerous characters
is your standard, Cryptonomicon would bear comparison.

<<(DeLillo I would not group with TRP or WG--his range
is somewhat limited--he is more like McElroy, though
Delillo is strong on style, very rich prose ...>>

I quite agree.

<<franzen, lethem, wallace, delillo etc.--these are
our
watered down pynchons and Gaddis. i feel very lost
not having a new champion.>>

I'm not sure it's entirely fair to load these guys up
with the "next Gaddis" "next Pynchon" labels, only to
flog them for not being the next Gaddis or Pynchon.
And, in any case, I liked Infinite Jest way more than
M&D or Vineland. I liked The Corrections better too.

Then, of course, there's Roth, easily the best
American writer over the last twenty years.
