I'd like to recommend as particularly timely and delicious read, Mark
Helprin's 1991 novel, A Soldier of the Great War.
Also a favorite that I think reads particularly well now is Salman Rushdie's
1999 novel, The Ground Beneath Her Feet.
I also unhesitatingly recommend anything else by either of these
devastatingly insightful, humane, piercingly human writers. (e.g., Helprin:
Memoirs From Antproof Case, Winter's Tale ; Rushdie, Satanic Verses, Fury)
Not as an afterthought there is nothing Anthony Burgess ever wrote, except
perhaps, A Clockwork Orange, that couldn't bear rereading many times, with
the original Enderby leading the list!
